The history of East Finchley is deeply intertwined with Finchley Common, a massive expanse of historic woodland that once formed part of the Bishop of London’s hunting grounds. In the 13th century, the Bishop created a clearing through the forest to establish a new trade route heading north out of London. To protect his land, a gate was erected, giving birth to the historic name "The Great Gatehouse," which stood near where East Finchley Station sits today. Because this route became a major thoroughfare for wealthy merchants, the surrounding common notoriously became a favourite haunt for legendary highwaymen during the 17th and 18th centuries, including the infamous Dick Turpin, who used the thick forest cover for quick escapes.

Some History About East Finchley
The Industrial Era and a Pioneering "Garden Suburb"
East Finchley transformed rapidly from a rural hamlet into a bustling Victorian suburb following the arrival of the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway in 1867. This newfound accessibility attracted visionary planners and philanthropists. Just on the border of East Finchley lies the world-renowned Hampstead Garden Suburb, founded in 1906 by Henrietta Barnett. This ground-breaking project was designed to create an idyllic, community-focused neighbourhood where people of all social classes could live together in beautiful, cottage-style homes surrounded by greenery, completely redefining early 20th-century urban planning.
Architectural Masterpieces and Art Deco Icons
East Finchley boasts some of North London's most visually stunning architectural landmarks. Chief among them is East Finchley Underground Station, rebuilt in the late 1930s in a magnificent Art Deco and Streamline Moderne style. Perched high above the station entrance is The Archer, a famous 10-foot-tall bronze statue by Eric Aumonier, depicting a traditional archer releasing an arrow down the tracks toward London. Another prized local treasure is The Phoenix Cinema on the High Road. Originally opened in 1910 as the East Finchley Picturedrome, it is officially one of the oldest continuously operating, purpose-built cinemas in the entire United Kingdom, featuring a breath-taking 1930s Art Deco auditorium.
A Gathering of Brilliant Minds and Creative Pioneers
Over the decades, East Finchley’s leafy streets and village-like charm have attracted an array of remarkable historical figures, artists, and thinkers. George Bernard Shaw, the legendary playwright and co-founder of the London School of Economics, spent significant time in the area. The neighbourhood was also home to Spike Milligan, the brilliant and eccentric comedy genius behind The Goon Show, who lived on Holden Road. Peter Sellers, another comedy icon and Milligan's co-star, also spent parts of his early career living in East Finchley, cementing the area's reputation as a quiet breeding ground for British creative excellence.
Stately Spaces and Green Corridors
Today, East Finchley beautifully balances its lively High Road with spectacular green spaces. It is home to Cherry Tree Wood, a peaceful 11-acre park that stands as a precious, surviving remnant of the ancient Finchley Common woodland. Nearby, the grand St Pancras and Islington Cemetery, established in 1854, stands as the first municipally owned cemetery in London. Spread across 190 acres of beautifully landscaped, protected green space, it functions as a historic arboretum and a tranquil sanctuary for local wildlife, perfectly reflecting the enduring, green character of the N2 postcode.
